10-9-2020 Kalaloch Washington
We finally managed to make it out to Kalaloch. Took the day off from work and drove out Thursday evening. We left Kent at 4:30 and didn’t get in until about 9:00. Spent most of the drive from Kent to hwy101 in Olympia at a slow idle. 2.5 hours. Fuel economy was non-existent. I switched over to the rear tank at Aberdeen at 1/4. Thats about 100 miles and 14 gallons of fuel. Maybe 7mgp. I usually fill up in Aberdeen. It’s about 75 miles from Aberdeen to Kalaloch and it puts the front at 1/4 and the rear at 1/2 if I don’t. I need to use the fuel in the third tank so I pushed on through.
It’s busy here. They have the entire campground open. When we come in April just the sites on the north side are open. All the ocean view site are filled (of course) we found a reasonable site on the far south side. The site here are far from level. A lot of them have fairly significant inclines. Most are short sites too. I ended up on 2 blocks on the rear. It’s supposed to rain and thunder all weekend. Would have been nice to get an ocean view for that.
The water heater didn’t want to stay lit. It would fire right up and burn for 6 seconds then go out. Looks like the flame sensor was not positioned in the flame correctly. The manual says put a volt/ohm meter on it and measure when firing for a specific reading. I didn’t pack one so I spent about 30 minutes moving it around. Looks like it’s happiest when it’s towards the edge of the flame.

Rained all last night. Started about 6pm. Really nice to not be tent camping. Walked up the beach this morning. A bit of thunder farther up north but no lightning. About a mile up the beach Lorena took her hat off and her hair was standing straight up. 18 inches of hair. That’s usually a signal of imminent lightning strike. All she could think of is ‘get a picture quick’. Turned out to be a very dramatic picture. No lightning.
About 5pm we hear a really big tree snap and come down about 100 feet away from our camp sight. A reminder to stay vigilant. The boys are enjoying a bit of independence. They wandered about 2 miles up the beach both days to play in the tide pools. Also riding bikes to the lodge to buy snacks.
Still haven’t had the opportunity to empty the third fuel tank. Been raining too much. I’ll have to work that in while packing up in the morning.
